The ATI one has the best out of the box driver, however it is quite an old model. I have one, it's a fine video card, no fans and decent enough performance for a composited desktop.. well that is to say I have the card as the rest of the machine blew up now it's a useless sparepart (anyone willing to pay postage can have it).

The nvidia cards have that horrible driver but they are more recent, depending on what you plan to use the card for it might be a better choice.

It is closed source (proprietary), depends on how important this is to you.
The driver itself works brilliantly with my 7600gt and the go6100 chip in my laptop.

I think he may have meant the 'open' nvidia driver is horrible (which it is)...

oh, i couldn't care less about that. as long as my GTX285 works, i'm good.

GeForce 7600GT OWNS...!!

It's a good card when it's not freezing up on some games like mine.

I do QA if you knew how many problems that thing causes you would be of that opinion as well.

7600GT really did well for me before I got the 8800GT

"Best" depends on your selection criteria.
For me the clear winner would be a passively cooled FX 5200.
