Hello,

I am having issues with sound and video while playing movies, ever since I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 on a machine.

The problems (which are several) are as follows

If I do not use firefox and start using any video program (Totem, Mplayer, VLC)
- Sound is alright
- Video is somewhat slow and jerky

If I use firefox
- No sound
- Video is incredibly slow in VLC and Totem. Mplayer only plays the first few seconds of the movie and then freezes

I have seen several others having issues like this but no solution has worked for me. I have tried:
- reinstalling totem, vlc, mplayer
- reinstalling w32codecs
- uninstalling compiz fusion ( to the best of my ability).

Can anyone help?

Thank you

I have the sound problem with all my programs. The first program that is opened always is the one that gets to use the speakers. Unfortunately I have no Idea how to fix it.

Follow the instructions here for your version. It sounds like you're missing some multimedia files.
