its seems that way on mine. When will ATI release drivers that actually work well?

When it becomes in their financial interest to do so. Not likely for now.

I'd never buy ATI.. too many friends of mine had problems with thier drivers..
I love Nvidia for thier Linux efforts.

I am using an ATI 9800 Pro

But it was a learning experience. I learned that I will not buy another ATI product.

Nvidia from now on.

To answer the original post.

I used Easyubuntu and all my problems disappeared.

gandalf@gandalf:~$ fgl_glxgears
3404 frames in 5.0 seconds = 680.800 FPS
5598 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1119.600 FPS
5590 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1118.000 FPS
5582 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1116.400 FPS
5597 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1119.400 FPS
5585 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1117.000 FPS

Some people maybe getting better numbers, but I am happy.

Just search the forums. for "easyubuntu"

Are you confusing fgl_glxgears with simply glxgears

gandalf@gandalf:~$ glxgears
gandalf@gandalf:~$ glxgears -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark 21689 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4337.710 FPS
21007 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4201.275 FPS
23924 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4784.800 FPS
23928 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4785.441 FPS

And if you are getting much better FPS, I am proud of you. But I am doing the best I can with what I got. And for now, I am satisfied with my 3D output.

sorry, i thought that was glxgears. and it wasnt meant to be a putdown to you or anything. i was just surprised cause i thought my mx 440(bought for 40 bucks off ebay about 3 years ago) was outperforming the 9800.

yeah I would just switch to NVIDEA but since I have a laptop thats not exactly an easy process (I'm not even sure its possible)
