How can I know that 'Update Manager' or 'aptitude' or 'synaptic' is running on my system. I use ubuntu 8.10 LTS. I am facing problem in installing flash media player 10.2.something.something.
I have downloaded a deb (install_flash_player_10_linux.deb) file and facing problem in installing it through Gdebi installer.

Can any other method work for me?

you can always install ubuntu-restricted-extras package from add/remove or synaptic or terminal (so many options!) this has all the proprietory extras you need! (flash, mp3 playback, windows fonts etc.) a very awesome package.
