i am currently running ubuntu 8.10. and was wondering if i was to install 9.04 would i lose my settings? i have installed 9.04 on my laptop and some of the effects that i like (such as burn) do not work on it, is the upgrade recommended?

Do you have an ATI graphics card? If so, do not upgrade until you determine is there is support for your hardware. Many (even some fairly new) ATI graphics cards are no longer supported with a proprietary driver from AMD. Upgrading otherwise should be ok, though I personally did not achieve much better performance on one machine, and, because of the ATI issue, I am holding off upgrading on my main laptop.
