Here's (http://channel9.msdn.com/showpost.aspx?postid=151853) what Redmond's blowing money on.

I am a King Crimson fan, but/and I think this is more or less obscene...
But it made me think that getting some cool people to make music for (K)Ubuntu would maybe be a cool feature.
Some star would maybe be interested to do it for free. My first thought, without knowing what they think of Linux (or at all), was Radiohead, which makes a lot of cool ambient noise.

Not exactly a deal breaker for getting people to use (K)Ubuntu, but good advertising nonetheless.

Edit: PS: the subject was *obviously* a joke. I'm not into good side/ bad side thought when it comes to computers.

Linux gets 'sold' on it's merits.
It doesn't need bands to create music to accompany it.
Linux IS music (to my ears) :)

I don't see the problem... If it was done, without compromising anything, why would you mind? I'm not proposing that developers drop what they're doing and focus on the packaging, it was merely a thought.
Personally I think it would be cool to hype Ubuntu with something like this, but you're of course free to disagree.

Disclaimer: I'm not one of those people who think that computer users would run screaming like little school girls towards Linux if there was more eye candy on the Ubuntu desktop, so please don't assume I am.

Hehehe...
I'm not a techie, and I'm not a Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) type nerd. However, I would think that a lot of people in the alternative music scene would love promoting a free OS, showing that they don't like global monopolies.

Brian Eno did Windows sounds too (98/XP). I still love him though.

This might be silly or petty... but i actually quite enjoy the default sounds and visual theme of Ubuntu.

Though it would be an extra cool factor to know some really talented indie (not as in type of music..but as in independent) musician contributed.

It IS ironic about DRM and there is plenty to criticize about M$ but you can't criticize them for putting in great sounds. It's sad that the evil empire has someone as cool as Robert Fripp to play into (or should I say for) them. But it looks like Vista will have great sounds.

Yes, at least Windows Vista will have something great: the music of the great musician, while Fripp himself uses Mac as I understand from his diaries. I wonder if Fripp sign a contract preventing him to write music for any kind of divice which has or may have in future any kind of software code including but not limiting by personal computers, game co

I like the Ubuntu jingle, though I switched it off anyway :-) It would be nice to have another great musician to write a loop for Ubuntu though. Like David Sylian for example, or Peter Gabriel...

I would have loved Stereolab to do the sounds for Ubuntu. They make fantastic music and their views on our world seem to fit the Ubuntu philosophy... See for example the lyrics of Au Grand Jour (http://stereolab.koly.com/songs/lyrics.php?lid=10), Surrealchemist (http://stereolab.koly.com/songs/lyrics.php?lid=130) or Mountain (http://stereolab.koly.com/songs/lyrics.php?lid=83).
