There have been many folks here who've expressed an interest lately in running this new "open-source" web browser from a company called Mozilla, named "Firefox," but you don't want to have to be saddled with running Windows just for the benefit of it. Well...

Fear no more, ladies and gentlemen, for I, the legendary MikeTheC will show you how!

Some of you may now be saying "Well, yeah, I know I can run 'Wine' but that's a kludge. I'm running Ubuntu and I don't want to have to support a Win32 environment on my system." Alright, no problem.

Others of you may be thinking, "I don't want to have to track down the source code -- does Mozilla even use svn? -- and then have to sit there, compile it, and hope to high heaven that Mitchell Baker's people worked all the bugs out."

Have you wanted to surf the web, free of viruses and worms? Do you want that tabbed browsing experience you've only ever dreamed of? How about being able to re-skin the browser and add other search systems?

But wait, there's more!

Do you feel bogged down by banner ads as you surf for porn news and information? Do you hate having to deal with pop-ups and other annoying ways for advertisers to get you to look at naked women get you to spend your hard-earned money? Well then, fear no more!

In three easy steps, I'll show you that running Firefox on Ubuntu linux is, in fact, all fun-n-games!

Step 1: Go to your "Applications" menu.
Step 2: Go to your "Internet" sub-menu.
Step 3: Click on "Firefox".

Yes, that's right! Firefox actually comes bundled with your favorite distribution of Linux, fully compiled and ready to take you on a web-surfing adventure!

Firefox. Safe web surfing for the rest of us.

No squirrels were harmed in the making of this advertisement.

Coming soon to an Ubuntu near you:

They said it would never be made...

They said it would be banned...

They said it was a rudimentary feature on just about every other operating system...

Starring Jean-Claude Van Damne, Dolph Lundgren, Stephen Segal and every other out-of-work tough guy from the 90's...

This summer, prepare for:

libdvdcss support

No, dude. It's really true!!!

But I know the mantra... "Pics, or it never happened." Well, here's a screen shot of it running, honest-to-God, natively on my Ubuntu system! Check it out!

This is purely anecdotal evidence, but I've been using Firefox for all the above mentioned purposes  and I've even clicked "yes" to "You have to download this codec to see the most amazing video in the world...", on purpose! OK, Firefox doesn't deserve all the credit, though. Maybe it has more to do with my "obscure" OS. :)

WTF? I might forego the copy of Firefox that shipped with the copy of Ubuntu I'm running right now, and see if I can do a hack with the Win98SE install disk so I can check out IE4 under Wine!!!!!

Never mind.......

I thought this thread was going to fix the problem I have with having to use (though I have not condescended to use) Firefox in Wine so Macromedia Shockwave Player could work (which is needed for sites such as CalcChat) because Adobe hasn't offered it to Linux yet (only with their Adobe Flash Player have they). A little disappointed, but funny...

Really? I've been using wget and less for web browsing. This might be a bit easier.

MaxIBoy

I agree that "less" is better than "more," but "most" is the "best."

So far, they only seem to have alpha level support, but the minefield build is working great for me!
