Which ISO are you using? Try with Ubuntu Alternate CD ISO (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate).

Try with Ubuntu Alternate CD ISO (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate).The alternate cd is easy to install. The only problem you may have is if you want to manually partition the hard drive. It is not hard, but it could be confusing the first time. If you want to install it to the whole disk, there is an option to do so. That is the easiest way to install.

I have never tried installing with wubi.exe (because I don't want that inferior M/S O/S computer on any of my computers) but if wubi.exe has a safe graphics mode similar to the live CD or Alternate CD installation version of Ubuntu, then try safe graphics mode installation.
