Black Screen after Login - Help

Please using Jaunty for sometime now, suddenly black screen after login with mouse.
No activity.

Terminal and failsafe gnome ok.

Tried all solutions in this forums nothing is helping do not want to reinstall will lose lot of stuff.

What exactly have you tried so far? Switch to second terminal and try <code>sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart</code>

Nothing happeing still mouse with balck screen.
Tried all that was spoken in forums tried removing compiz , tries reinstalling gdm etc etc

This problem came up after the home/.dmrc permission error on logon that i rectified and when i tried to login this happened.

Hi,me too have same prob,, what i did is, i enabled blurr windows effect in compiz fusion , then the screen became black, and no sessions is working except failsafe terminal.. what to do..? i have installed lots of stuff ,, so not willing to reinstall ubuntu..

i have tried also recovery mode, but still black screen,,!

pls help!
