This looks cool if it's for real. And if it is for real I again ask why the hell is Gnome so butt ugly?!?! Obviously Linux can look good.Nokia Linux smartphone leak:Ars (http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/05/alleged-nokia-linux-smartphone-plans-exposed-by-leak.ars)

Once more into the flame war.....

It's in the eye of the beholder. Whatever that was in the link was for me an ugly, confusing mass. I can't stand dark themes as there is no clear delineation between different sections of the screen.

It's obvious to me that the iPhone's impact on cell phone industry design is still reverberating.

Nokia are keeping their cards pretty close on this one for now, there is no confirmation that this is actually anything but a mockup.

However this is what is possible with next generation tools like Clutter (or for that matter Moonlight does this as well with added features).

It does however show some of the new buzzwords in the free desktop, like geolocation. There is a fair chance if just a mockup this is some of the functionality we might see in all of the next generation shells. GNOME 3 will also have something like that via libchamplain (http://projects.gnome.org/libchamplain/).

There are many attempts at tying all this together, Android does it, the moblin platform is definitely also going to explore that path. GNOME3 already has geolocation awareness (with integration in Empathy).

I wouldn't at all be surprised if something like those screenshots were possible today. Just look at what Moblin pulled out of their bag in less than a year using clutter. While not perfect and not finished yet it does show what we can do with specialized UIs already.
