Recently my 7600GT decided to die, so a friend gave me an old card of his. Its a 5800 Ultra, but the noise it makes is mind numbingly LOUD. Is there anything I can do to make it quieter, short of removing the fan?

Replacing the fan?

Someone has even posted a Youtube video of how loud it is

Only this one is even louder, and the noise is really high pitched!

The sad part is, the FX5800 Ultra isn't even worth the noise it causes. It's a slow card.

I guess the only other alternative is to underclock the already slow card and control the fan at a slower speed.

It can play Quake IV and Doom III ok, so its more than ok for me at the moment speed wise. Its just the horrible high pitched scream it makes. You can hear it above headphones at full volume!

BTW, is it even possible to control the fan speed of this card?

Try dusting the fan out.

The fan is clean.

After some research this card seems to be noted for its noise. I think I just have to learn to bleed from my ears...

Why don't you just buy some official nVidia ear plugs?

A high-pitched noise coming from the card's fan?

Sounds like the fan could use some WD-40.

There are a variety of GPU coolers that you can use to replace the original fitment.

But it might work out cheaper to sell the 5800 and buy a better card with passive cooling as standard.

You can get heatsink kits to replace the fans on some cards. With an older card like that it shouldn't be producing too much heat. Your case fans should be able to cope easily if you switched it to passive cooling instead of a fan.

+1 for passive cooling
