Hi,

I own a lenovo ideapad s10e netbook. I don't find UNR a very stable OS. Ubuntu Desktop edition works great for me? Other forums suggest installing Ubuntu base system and a light weight Desktop environment in order to save system resources.

What is Ubuntu base system? How to install it using USB as i don't have an external CD/DVD drive? After that how can i install UNR desktop on that installations, that is i want to use UNR as my desktop environment.

I have separate root, swap and home partition. i would like to keep it so.

I am a noob please help me,
Thanks,
SK

There would be little to no benefit to what you describe. UNR is not a "lightweight desktop environment." It is a heavy-weight, buggy, and unstable DE in my opinion.

What you probably read about was an Ubuntu minimal install plus a lightweight desktop environment or windows manager like icewm, fluxbox, openbox, etc. Here is one of many good tutorials on the topic (with screenshots): http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

(note: instead of burning a CD, you can use Unetbootin to "burn" the installer to a USB thumb drive: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/)

If you are just looking for "a faster version of Ubuntu" save yourself a lot of trouble and try CrunchBang: http://crunchbanglinux.org/ Its creator did all the work of a minimal install for you.

I agree that UNR is a buggy OS.

Thanks for your detailed answer.

Setting up a Lightweight DE is too much work for me.

I will try Crunchbag and will get back to you.

Do you think a lightweight DE actually improves performance and reduces power consumption that you can observe?

What works on Ubuntu will it work on Crunchbag? I mean by both hardware and software.

Thanks,
SK

Improved performance, definitely. Power consumption, I am not sure.

Crunchbang is Ubuntu at its core. It should work with all the same hardware, and you can install any application you like from the Ubuntu repositories.
