View Full Version : [ubuntu] Grub won't boot Jaunty - Error 15 file not found

I created a new partition near the end of my disk and installed Jaunty on it. After installation, it wouldn't boot, giving me the stage1.5 error.

So then I installed grub into the MBR and selected my existing Ubuntu install sda6 as root. It can now boot into the old Ubuntu on sda6, but when I copy the Jaunty partition options from Jaunty's menu.lst to the working menu.lst on the root partition, it still doesn't work, it gives the Error 15 file not found error and returns to the grub menu if i try.

If I change it to say "root (hd0,6)" it gives error 2, though Grub can apparently see the partition fine.

If I change the first entry to say root (hd6,0):

title Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic
# uuid c78c2847-6416-4184-b714-8a37280b648b

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-11-generic

I get "Error 2: Bad file or directory type" if I try to run the first option, and get "Error 15: File not found" if I try to run the second option that still uses uuid.

I used GParted to shrink my existing Intrepid partition upwards and set up an 8 GB partition for Jaunty in the same starting sector. After installation, I get this:

GRUB Loading stage1.5

Error 18

The Jaunty partition is on /dev/sda8 and has 2.19 GiB of files on it, so it installed. Fdisk says:

Thanks for nothing!

I ended up shuffling my partitions around and then creating a dedicated boot partition, which I can then boot the Jaunty install from, and it doesn't care about the BIOS translated area.

First you should post your whole menu.lst. The stuff that looks like it is commented out in the beginning gets read when you do a kernel update...if the root uuid isn't in sync with what you have there you can have issues later.

Second, I suspect the problem has to do with your uuid's not being correct.
can you post the output of:

ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/

The Error message said the Jaunty boot was out of range. I don't know how that's possible if Intrepid booted from the same sector, but a separate boot partition fixed it.
