Yup, just got an old beater for free that I'm going to give to a friend. It's running Windows 98 and I'd like to keep that smunched in there just in case they need it for something.

...How exactly do I do that? That is, I don't know how to shrink a windows 98 partition. Can I just use the one that comes with the live ubuntu CD? The Windows 98 install is very fresh.

Also, it's not really THAT much of a beater. (25 gig harddrive, pentium III...) I assume jaunty will do fine on there, right? That's not a stupid assumption?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but... I don't know the answers.

Thanks!

The Partitioner step of the Jaunty installer should give you the option to resize the Windows partition and install Ubuntu in the freed space. It is pretty easy (just don't accidentally choose Use Entire Disk). The base install is under 4gb

Ubuntu is okay on a Pentium 3 as long as you have 384mb of ram (the more the better). Xubuntu is a little bit faster on old hardware.
