I'm new to Ubuntu and to ask question too. Last night I was installing new packages from the Ubuntu server.I come back today and try to login I see my top and bottom panels for not more than 5 sec and disappear, a Desktop with a white back ground appears with a mouse cursor, nothing else. I try to to fix it by creating a new user but the problem is still exists. when i login to the command interface I can see my files.

please help me I have some many data there.

At the login screen, bottom left corner is options, select gnome, change session (?)(don't recall exactly what the wording is) then log in, should fix things. If not, then reboot and during grub splash,
hit escape > Recovery mode > Enter (let finish)
Repair Broken Packages > Enter (if it asks about updates hit N) (let finish)
Try to fix X server > Enter (Let finish)
Resume normal Boot > Enter
