hmm i dont know
maybe u have to be in windows to sign up and download it
It does look like it works under linux once you do get a account and the client downloaded linux and silkroad (http://www.silkroadtavern.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5337)

Maybe my post comes one year late, but if u use Konqueror and u go into configure Konqueror menu under Settings, u scroll untill u find browser identification and u add for www.silkroadonline.net that u use internet explorer 6 under winXP. So its a really nice feature that tricks the site so u can acces it under linux.
PS:i'll try to install the game using wine i wonder if it works

@akurashy: just like vecinu's post, mine comes a year late; i hope that by now you already solved your Firefox issue with the Silkroad site. If not, here's how: go to this (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/) page, install the add-on, close firefox and re-open it, go to "Tools-->User Agent Switcher", switch it to identify itself as internet explorer, then go to the silkroad page (http://www.silkroadonline.net/). If you're using Opera, go to "Tools-->Quick preferences-->Edit site preferences-->Network" and change your "Browser Identification" to "Mask as Internet Explorer". By the way, has anyone gotten Kal Online (http://www.kalonline.com/) to run on wine or cedega?

silkroad runs fine here, on ubuntu 7.04, nvidia 6600 go 128 mb, using nvidia drivers.
Works almost as good as in windows. few graphic glitches (like no level up animation), but is 100% playable.

Thanks. I'll have to talk to you later when I get a machine up with ubuntu. This is one of the main games I like to play but haven't had highspeed connection to play. I'm waiting for the Europe addition to be released and start with a new euro character. Are the servers still notoriously laggy and overpopulated? I tried signing on for two days and kept getting the infamous Disconnected from server window.

How did you install silk road to begin with and is this same guide possible with Hero Online? A million thanks in advance..

ddcc
June 26th, 2007, 10:22 PM
Laggy + Overpopulated? Yep, especially with summer, europe, and botters.

Install silkroad should simply be "wine installername.exe" I've got no clue whether it would work with hero online, but you might want to check out the wine appdb entry on hero online.

JohnGalt
June 28th, 2007, 02:00 AM
Sigh, I want to play europe so bad but all I've heard is complaints of full servers and botters. I really wish they'd limit the afk stalls. The towns get so crowded and boggy that I can hardly run to get out of there. At least back when I used to play. I've waited for what, 2 years for europe.

ddcc
June 28th, 2007, 02:32 AM
All you have to do is to wait for Europe to come out, then the stall network feature comes out too. That'll reduce afk stalls, but not botters.

If you look in the appdb instructions *dammit still offline* you need to set compatibility in winecfg to windows 98.

So see all of you are trying to play Silkroad on linux.
I will help you to do that Because I have it running no lie. I will post screen shots later.
Here what you'll need a good computer, 1GB ram at least and good graphics card. This will help you play Silkroad and at least a hell of a processor.:KS:popcorn:

geez, he's just trying to help.

Sorry if I perceived it differently, I wasn't exactly in the best mood at that time anyway. It seemed to me that he was sort of being arrogant, as there is not much point in telling us that he has screenshots unless it implies that we can't get it working and he's the only one that can. And the other statement about system requirements just bugs me because when I have it working well with the hardware that I can get, when someone comes along and tells me that I definitely can't get it to work and you need to buy something better, it just strikes me as ignorant.

SAM: Looks like you posted just a couple of seconds before me. :)

Alot of folks are like me. That is No clue on how to go about installing silk road or any other game of the sorts using wine.

I have installed wine from repository. How do I install silk road online? How do I configure wine. Please show screenshot howto guide. I find this easier than just texts..

I would not discourage. I would like to get Conquer online, silk road, fylff, and others working in wine. I have heard from somewhere that you need some window things installed first like IE or windows media player... Is this true?

ddcc

Finding out how to get most apps to work with wine is pretty simple, you go to appdb.winehq.org, then search for the name of the app and look at the comments and instructions. The link to Silkroad Online's "profile" is http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=5391 . I've also reproduced the instructions below. I'd attach screenshots, but I'm not at my computer, I'm using a shared computer elsewhere.

1)Make sure that your computer meets the recommended requirements for Silkroad (Pentium 4 or higher, 512MB RAM, 3D and DirectX 9.0b compatible video card, and 3GB of free HDD space) and that you have the necessary drivers for your graphics card.
2)Follow the instructions at http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb to add the wine repository, then follow the directions to use Synaptic or Terminal to download and install the package.
3)Download the Silkroad client and unzip it if you need to. Then run "wine executable.exe" (without quotes and replace executable.exe with the silkroad installer exe)
4)Run "winecfg" in terminal (without the quotes) and set compatibility for sro_client.exe and silkroad.exe (in folder ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Silkroad) to Windows 98.
5)Run the client either from Applications>Wine>Programs>Joymax>Silkroad or from your Desktop.
6)Wait for patching to complete.
7)Hit play.
Depending on your distro and other variables, you may need to build wine from source in order to get Silkroad to work at a usable speed.

Thanks a bundle. I shall give this a try today.

Odd. That's never happened to me. Have you read the HOWTO, Notes, and Warning?

Feba
July 12th, 2007, 10:10 AM
It worked perfectly for me, thanks! I still have a problem, in that it's in a psuedo fullscreen mode. I can see and move things on my desktop, but it's anchored to the upperleft corner, and hides any other windows that might be behind it, even when it shouldn't be on top.

I haven't read through anything to try to fix it yet though, I'm happy it works.

ddcc
July 12th, 2007, 05:15 PM
Ah, yes I probably need to add a note about that. You have to options to fix it. Silkroad is running in 1024*768 I think, but your desktop is 1280*1024. Either increase the Silkroad resolution in game to match your X server, or go into winecfg and have it emulate a windowed desktop.

Feba
July 12th, 2007, 06:19 PM
I tried to have it emulate a desktop, but it didn't do anything. I can turn SRO into a Window by pressing WIN+ALT+RETURN at the game, but it's incredibly laggy, and still has the same problems as the anchored version.

I'll probably play around with the resolution once the servers have enough room for me to play again.

I am having some major lag issues with SRO, I think this is because I am running at the default graphics card MG count of 64 megs when I have radeon express 200m but I can't find the direct3d registry key to change this. anybody have any ideas?

ddcc
September 26th, 2007, 04:08 PM
Are you running with the accelerated 3d video drivers? You can change the amount of RAM your video card gets by going into the BIOS and finding the settings labeled "AGP Aperture Size" or something similar. The exact amount you should set it to depends on how much system RAM you have, you can google for the details.

Cuogar
September 28th, 2007, 07:17 AM
My bios is set to the highest setting of 128 megabytes, though my question pertains to a registry key that is titled direct3d that I can change to match what my graphics card is actually at and not the standered 64 megs that it has out of the box. my problem comes with the fact that I don't have a direct3d registry key. but thank you for that bit about the bios, I need to see if I can change that on my parents pc now.

ddcc
September 29th, 2007, 12:18 AM
Also, I'm not sure what video driver you're using in Linux, but if you're using an nvidia card "nvidia-settings" should launch the nvidia settings applet and allow you to change the quality/performance settings. Also make sure you're not running wine with two audio drivers, and you can also change the Silkroad in-game graphic quality settings.

You can't use the old Chinese silkroad installer. You have to download the new installer from Joymax (not the patch), either from the torrent or from fileplanet. Silkroad also requires you to logon to their website before it'll give you the download link.

i've already reinstalled ubuntu about 6 times due to radeon drivers that people said would work not working lol i even tryed this work around some guy told me about, and it did work but as soon as i logged into ubuntu i got a flat white screen, and anyway i was told with the work around it only works on whatever the defalt res is, witch for me is 1024 and im not going to run everything on 1024 -.-

OK, I've been following all your advice to install SRO, but I keep hitting the same problem. At the client screen, where it does the update, the start button doesn't appear. It's already done the update and everything.

Most frustrating to come this close and not be able to play. I'm pretty sure my computer meets the requirements because I got it to play on Vista (I'm using a dual boot laptop).

Anyway, I hope you guys still are around. I know this thread is pretty old now.

Downloaded the torrent which will only works with utorrent which fails to install in wine, but also utorrent is a client that most isp's block anyway... and sure enough at 60% my ISP blocked me for 5 hours!
finally got it all downloaded(913mb) and the .exe produces some error message about bad .exe format... downloading again now at limited speeds.

IE Only -> Switchproxy to IE 7.
uTorrent -> For some odd reason, Azureus won't load it if you double click, but if you manually add the torrent file it works fine.
File error -> Redownload...or use the fileplanet/etc links.

However, I hope that you're aware, just like most Korean mmos', Silkroad has a LOT of nothing but grinding (i.e. hunt 200x, get 200y, etc)

Firstly, thanks to all who have been posting helpful responses to queries. WineHQ and those AppDB pages are, I think for many, total rubbish when it comes to getting things working. Most of the time, they are a complete waste of time and effort scanning through posts of issues and replies of suggestions which usually do not work. I am NOT saying that its not a noble effort, because it most certainly IS. What im saying is that it is only as good as a forum can ever be, including the Ubuntu Forums, and a better workaround is needed when it comes to getting Windows (DirectX) games working on Linux. For me, that workaround has been using the PlayOnLinux and WorkOnLinux app, which has been a godsend, because it completely automates the process of installing Windows apps, and configuring wine via scripts. Using that app, I got Silkroad running with litterally no effort on my part. It was exactly as if I were in a Windows environment installing the program, and when the script finished, voila! It all "just worked". Same with Microsoft Office 2003, World of Warcraft, War3, EQ2, so on and so forth. Not advocating one way of doing this over another, but this type of project is EXACTLY what is needed to really make the Wine project anything more than just a nuisance to work with.

Last time I saw sro runs pretty fine on wine, you can access the site by two ways:

1.- Blocking javascript with a firefox extension.

2.- Changing your user agent with a firefox extension.

Conclusion:

Firefox > Opera (=P).

Last time I saw sro runs pretty fine on wine, you can access the site by two ways:

1.- Blocking javascript with a firefox extension.

2.- Changing your user agent with a firefox extension.

Conclusion:

Firefox > Opera (=P).

Yeah because opera can do the same without addons so that makes firefox somehow superior...

Right click page > Edit site preferences > network > Browser identification > Mask as internet explorer.

Sounds about twice as long as it really takes but it accomplishes the same without addons.

I seriously doubt 99% of the people who uses opera need built in user agent manager.

Web page of Silkroad Online is optimized under below condition.
Windows Operation Systems ( Microsoft Windows 9X/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 )
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and above.

You need to install the windows version of Firefox or IE (I recommend Firefox Windows version) I have done this trying to get shockwave working but no luck but I can also go into Silkroads web site!

An old post i know, but it come top of google search for silkroad online.

I have silkroad running under wine on Ubuntu 9.10 64bit with only minor issues.

PC Spec:
Asus F3sv
Nvidia 8600m GS (256MB)
4GB memory
Ubuntu 9.10 64Bit

Software:
SilkroadOnline_GlobalOfficial_v1_240
Wine --version - 1.0.1

So far everything has been working well except some minor sound issues, which are sorted out if i load SR before I load any other programs.

Silkroad has changed from gameguard to HackShield from what i can see, gameguard does not work right on linux, but hackshield seems to be more linux "friendly" than gameguard.

Since I quit playing this game when I moved full time to Ubuntu and did not want a dual boot setup, i thought i would give it another go today and have been surprised at how well it is working now.

Good luck
