I've looked but can't seem to find it. Does anyone know where I might find the background used in the new login screen without the username prompt? I REALLY want to use it as my desktop background.

You'll find the picture in /usr/share/gdm/themes/Human/background.png :)

PERFECT!!! Thank you very much! I didn't think to search for a .png file... once again, 15 years of windows experience continues to hold me back... *sigh*

Gnome has pretty nice support for different types of background images, you can even use transparent/partially transparent PNG or SVG images to let the background color(s) show through the wallpaper.. Makes it pretty easy to create wallpapers that can change to fit your desktop colors.
