no main menu or panels

I was using my computer earlier today with no problems but today after getting home from school I turn on my computer and ubuntu boots up to the desktop but there isn't a menu or a bottom panel or anything (I switched to the traditional desktop in NBR).

So what happened and how do I get it back?

Alt-F2 > Brings up your terminal

type gnome-panel
