First off, let me start by stating that Ubuntu 8 works fine, it's just Ubuntu 9 that I'm experiencing these problems with. I've tried upgrading from Ubuntu 8 to Ubuntu 9 and fresh installing Ubuntu 9, both of which failed to fix the issue.

My error: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/jlp09550/the-ubuntu-error.jpg (sorry that I couldn't type it out here, but it's a bit too much)

However, when I try to access the /dev/disk folder, there is only a "by-uuid" (I believe) folder in there, and the only file in that folder is "pci-0000:00:14.1-scsi-0:0:0:0 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/jlp09550/ls-devdisk.jpg)".

I've searched and tried many methods, including manually "apt-get update"'in the system through the LiveCD, tried reformatting entirely and reinstalling, and all fail.

The computer:
- Dell Inspiron 1501
- AMD Turion 65 X2 Mobile Tech TL-50 @ 1.6 GHz
- For Ubuntu: an external 1TB HDD. (worked on Ubuntu 8 fine)
- 1GB RAM
- Wireless connectivity

Help?
