From The Independent :

Britain faces a skills shortage in IT unless more girls can be encouraged to study the subject at school. No wonder the Government has decided to take action.

Ontopic: Interesting that a shortage must bring this up.. should be in public debate anyways..

Offtopic: Shortage? Wow.. maybe it's time to move :)

Biggest pile of steaming **** that I have herd. Every couple of years this happens, people say oh IT needs more people. NO IT DOES NOT! The uk IT job market is totaly over saturated, there is something like only 1 post grad job for every 3 graduates each year in IT. The market is facing all out collapse due to cheep eastern competition and the big compaines moving IT centres there.

Even if more women are needed then its only going to come at the expense of other peoples jobs. No more IT people please, we have more than enough.

My experience from talking to 2 girls who were/are 'Computational Science' majors (a cross between math and comp sci).

Eventually, somehow they ended up as amth majors (one was a biology major beforehand). Then they are forced to take a computer science class and then BAM! switch to computational science.

As for the more women in IT field movement ... I remember in 10th grade, my history teacher saying that some large percentage of marriages were between co-workers (I think it might've been 50% or more, don't quote me on the number) ... Honesty, I see that claim as a very legitamate one.
