View Full Version : [SOLVED] Upgrading to 9.04 from Installation CD

May 19th, 2009, 12:14 PM
I apologies if this question has already been asked but I could not find the thread.

I live in a country where bandwidth is very expensive. So I ordered the Jaunty CD. I am also upgrading as apposed to a clean install (which is my usual preference) to save data on updates I have already downloaded and installed in to Intrepid.

Is there a way I can upgrade from the CD in stead of the internet?

Please check under Upgrading Using the Alternate CD/DVD

I knew it was to good to be true...

Well, I followed the instruction a few times (the upgrade dialogue did not appear) and pasted the command. But nothing happened. I pasted it into the terminal and was told
[code] sh: Can't open /cdrom/cdromupgrade [code/]

I added a 0 to cdrom and got the same output.

Are you using an Alternate CD?

What is this "Alternate CD" you speak of? I know only of the CD that was sent to me from the good people at Canonical which I ordered through shipit.ubuntu.com.

As far as I know, it is just a plain 9.04 Desktop Edition Ubuntu CD.

I thought it was called "alternate" because it is not the Internet.

An Alternate CD a text-based installation CD, meaning no graphical interface. As far as I know, you can only upgrade using an Alternate CD and with the Desktop CD, you have to do a fresh installation. You can download the alternate iso from here:

It is better to download using torrents. I am not sure if shipit sends you the alternate edition on request.

Is there a way I can back up and import all my system settings after the fresh install?

I am using aptonCD to back up the installed applications.

I have not used APTonCD but you can create local repository using it. Here is the link:

You can also make a list of the installed packages and use the list to reinstall those packages. Please see this post:

Thanks for your help. I think I am going to add this "upgrading from CD" idea to the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

Well, I guess there are advantages to having a fresh install, even though I will need to go through the driver issues, sound issues, update issues....
