RAW photos loading as thumbnails!!??!!

Wonder if anyone can help!!

when I try and open a RAW (.NEF) file in GIMP the file is opened as a thumbnail and I can't get the full quality......

any ideas? I can open the file properly in Digikam.

Hi, did you try to install UFRAW? That's how i did it to open .NEF files in GIMP, but i recommend RAWTHERAPEE for RAW file handling.

UFRAW should be in synaptic.

Hi there,

My (Canon) RAW images will show as thumbnails in a few image-viewers out there. Gthumb will handle them these days but my favourite is Geeqie (available through Synaptic).

As the previous poster said, UFRaw is good for working with GIMP. RawTherapee and Raw Studio also work as good stand-alone editors.

A rapidly improving application is Fotoxx (latest version is now on GedDeb), it has a number of useful tools including a (fake) HDR option. It handles RAW these days too.
