Does anyone actually use Ekiga?
I know several people who use Ubuntu as their primary system, none of them use Ekiga, they all use Skype. Not that I'm suggesting that we replace Ekiga with Skype :D

I use Skype, too. Partially out of ignorance - I'm just really unfamiliar with Ekiga. Which is sad, since it's present out-of-the-box.
Can I talk to Skype contacts on it, or is it an isolated network of some kind? That's essentially the deal-breaker for me.

I tried to set it up then got bored...having skype just makes anything else not necessary to me.

When I have a real need, I will likely set up some of my contacts on Ekiga.

I have tried Ekiga in 3 distros (same hardware). In two of the distros (Fedora 10 and Ubuntu 9.04) sound does not work at all. In Linux Mint 6, sound works, but it is incredibly choppy. Maybe I haven't tried hard enough, but getting Ekiga to work is not really a priority for me.

You can talk to users of Wengophone, Twinkle, and basically every other VOIP program... But not Skype, because Skype is an isolated network, Ekiga isn't.

Yet another open standard not used by the masses because they are all locked into the closed source one (skype).
That really sucks.
I would love to use Ekiga but everyone I know that uses VOIP is on Skype.
So I can't use it.
Same thing with MSN IM protocol, I would prefer to use the jabber protocol but would be talking to myself.

I used make my Windows friends use something open source to talk to me, though now I do not care so much. I do not video chat so pidgin works excellently for me. I used to use it on Windows.
Edit: You know, Windows would be tolerable if more GTK applications were ported.

I use voip to dial land lines. Skype is just better for that.

My university got a SIP server with accounts for students and teachers, and Ekiga works fine.

A lot of people don't use any VOIP at all, so the amount of no votes may not mean that they're using Skype, just that they don't use any.

That's a very good point. I wish I had thought of that. Unfortunately, I can't change the poll anymore. I still find the results very interesting: they're just what I expected, for once!

I use Ekiga together with my Asterisk server. I don't think it's a very good application though. I am having problems with sending DTMF and it hangs from now and then. Seems like Linphone is better, but uglier.

I no longer use VOIP, it has become too inconvenient and too expensive.

Sadly Ekiga is not practical for me, I cant Imagine my friends using it like skype. to them it probably will be the "Magic portal which I use to talk to my only umber geek friend".

It was a while ago :)
The really cool thing on that thread was that one of the Ekiga developers joined in the discussion and offered some very useful advice and tips.

I have used both products for sometime. Originally, SKYPE on windows mainly because EKIGA didn't run on Windows but now it does just fine. Ekiga has many options that aren't readly apparent such open source and with diamond card and voipcheap land line calls are no problem and free with voipcheap and LDAP support Evolution. Ubuntu back in the 6... days I had Ekiga and Windows had Skype that's when I began using them.
I'm now run 3 different OS systems (Windows laptop, home desktop and business desktop Ubuntu "7.10 and 9.04") now with single software application which is EKIGA. I do run Skype on linux and Window just a little glitzy for me.
The audio quality of Ekiga with many user attached is great. Berkeleytips works very well with Ekiga and a couple HUG groups use it with XCHATs as does Berkelytips.
Ekiga does have its ups and downs but the audio and video quality is great. I found SKYPE for Windows prior to returning to Linux.

I really want to use Ekiga but haven't been able to so far. I want to use voipstunt (for FREE calls to landlines abroad) and voipcheap for cheap calls to mobile phones abroad. I have been using both these programs for about 10 years - both on Windows xp and Vista - and have saved an absolute fortune on the phone bill. If any one has any advice, I would really appreciate it. I think Ubuntu 9.10 is a big improvement!

With Karmic I have now left Ekiga for SFLphone. Works really good and has pulseaudio support.
