Can someone walk me through from downloading( to make sure I am not skipping something) each step required to install a tar.gz.

I have downloaded about seven different tar.gz files and followed the instructions typically: tar xvzf (filename).tar.gz
cd /(file folder)
./config
make
make install

then I have tried exec -cl and run and also clicking on the .exe file in the GNU

at that point most of the time I am getting errors and / or nothing...

I am using Ubuntu for Netbooks

Hi, Ubuntu does not run .exe files you can use a program called wine to possible install an .exe. What are you trying to install?

tar.gz is a type of archive file, like a .zip in windows. Anything can be inside the archive. Can you give a more specific example?

I am trying to install: airsnort, aircrack, and kismet. I was told that these are great programs to test your networks system security. I run a few programs that I would like to maintain a good level of security on.
