I think this is the best place to start:
I lost my laptop to a bad cat :-( but was able to save the HDD.
I had an Inpiron 6000 - AMD, 2G ram, 1.8GHz, ATI video (64MB)
- gone

Now I'm using an Inspiron B130 (1300) with less:
- Celeron M, 1G ram, 1.6GHz, Intel 915 (actually boots faster)

This is not a Dell issue, nor a Laptop issue, but a Downgrade question.
I can handle the lower speed and the transition to a bcm43xx(&#$!@#$ wifi,
but I have a single partition with no separate program or /home,
and have to either reinstall (Hardy or Jaunty)
OR
pull some command line magic I'm not yet familiar with and
1 - adapt to lower swap space (no big deal)
2 - maybe less ram is important? not sure - (2G > 1G)
3 - different processor - (AMD > Celeron M)
4 - different VIDEO - had to delete xorg.conf just to get here. (ATI > intel915)

How to proceed?
I don't necessarily need blinding speed or cool effects, I just want it to work without frownie-faces.

Thanks in advance!
