so i've been using arch linux and ubuntu off and on, and one of my favourite apps in arch is thunar-light

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=24478

it's basically thunar without it's xfce dependencies (xfce panel, wallpaper-changing menu, etc) and i really like the smaller amount of fluff for when i'm using openbox.

does anyone know of an package like this for ubuntu? if not, any suggestion on how to do it myself? i've done very little package management.

I'm rather a newbie to all this, but in my search for ultra-lightweight desktop environment and file managers, I discovered the LXDE (http://lxde.org) desktop environment (available in Ubuntu repos) and it's file manager, PCMan.

It has the familiarity and simplicity of WinXP but is super lightweight (even more so than XFCE). I run it on top of Crunchbang (an Ubutu-based ultra-light distro) on an ancient old low-resource computer and it flies along, lightweight and speedy.

I dunno if I answered your question or not (still a newbie - only two months since WinXP, which is all I've ever known 'til Ubuntu), but I hope this is useful!
