Hi,

Just installed the new KUbuntu and didn't really like it too much. What I did find very nice was the nice animation that occurs when the desktop is loading after successful authentication with the login screen. When this happens the user is dropped into a nice loaded desktop can you can work away immediately.

The question is, does anyone know how to get a similar system on the Gnome desktop?

Thanks a million!
Tim

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

select kdm

you can run your gnome (yuck) while having the login/animations that you like

Just tried out your recommendation but it doesn't give the effect I wanted. What I really want to see happen is the little splash screen which lets the desktop load behind it and then fades in to the destkop. Do you know how to achieve this?
