As reported on Slashdot (http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/15/1229231&art_pos=1) a couple of days ago and earlier today on Boycott Novell (http://boycottnovell.com/2009/05/18/gartner-group-vs-eu-linux/). You can see how it all went down by checking the original source here (http://www.stefanoforenza.com/the-eu-parliament-still-sticks-with-microsoft-heres-why/) [stefanoforenza.com]. Simply put, it was a dodgy study that was a bit too dodgy for Gartner to make public, so they kept it secret, till some journalist dug it up again. Hurray!
I haven't seen this posted around so I thought I'd show you this wonderful document (http://lnx.marcocappato.it/files/Studio%20Free%20Software%20CII%20EP%20(2009)%20213 66%20-%20Annex.pdf) [marcocappato.it] [pdf] from 2005. The first half is in French, but it starts with the English on page 25.
Personal favourites include the "Three Faces of Linux Hype" graph with its incredible labels:
Technology trigger, peak of inflated expectations, trough of disillusionment, slope of enlightenment, plateau of productivity.
And of course, the myth-debunking section:
Linux will be less expensive than Windows because StarOffice/OpenOffice.org can be used instead of Microsoft Office.
Linux is free.
There are no forced upgrades.
Linux will require significantly less labor to manage.
Linux will have a lower TCO than Windows because of available management tools.
Applications will be inexpensive or free.
Hardware can be kept longer if Linux is used, or older hardware can be used.
Skills are transferable.
The Gartner Group also have had a hand in the never-ending story of the fight for interoperability, openness and open standards in Europe. You can see more stuff about that here (http://bosson.blogspot.com/2009/05/stealing-free-from-open-standards.html) [bosson.blogspot.com]
