Snatching a domain that's PendingDeleteion

Hi, I'm trying to get a web domain that is at the pendingdeletion stage. The last owner didn't renew it so it's going to be made available soon. I've heard that backordering domains isn't always a good idea because most companies that offer backordering don't check very often, and I already have a registrar that I like to use.

What is the best way, other than refreshing the whois page every minute, to get this domain as soon as it becomes available?

Are there any good programs for Ubuntu or Windows that can help?

I don't know if theres a utility for that, there may be, but I'm pretty sure you could write a bash script that could do it. If it were my project I'd start by using wget and then grep to get just the info I needed reported to me. I'm sure gawk and some other stuff would be involved, it could be a fun project for you if your at all interested in learning a little bash scripting. If not, then keep digging, there may be a piece of software ready made.
