Was looking at the wiki for Mike Judge's new animated sitcom, The Goode Family.

Looks like they have a character named Ubuntu. ;P Their adopted African son.

Isn't that kind of racist? Since he's from Africa, he's called Ubuntu... :o

No. But it would be really racist if he was black! Maybe he even talks with an accent: that would be so racist I don't even know how racist it would be! Can you imagine? Someone who comes from Africa having an African name, speaking English as second language, and possibly being dark-skinned? I just can't fathom how amazingly racist that would be! :o

well, as if it matters...

by looking at the wiki page, they have a picture of the Goode family and their adopted sons skin color is obviously the same as theirs. Not everyone in/from Africa looks the same.

I looked at the wiki page, too. All I saw was a blank page with "Whoosh!" written on it.

The Ubuntu concept springs from the Bantu Languages, spoken in all southern-central africa: technically all Bantu native speakers are black.
The only withes of that corner of the word are S.Africans, but they do not speak a Bantu Language, but Afrikaans (derived from dutch)

So, what is racist is the fact that Ubuntu is "bleached"

I suppose this is the producers' subtle attempt at sarcasm.

Ah, I get the joke, he's from Africa, but he's white skinned. Like Ubuntu, (NOT TRYING TO BE RACIST) the majority of users are white, even though it's from Africa. ;) Nice.

So, if he were taken in as an infant by the Bantu, then would it be "ok"? I guess the whole point to the character is to become fodder for conversation...

I guess that if he had been adopted by any Bantu people, and then by some vegan freaks later on, his life would be quite f***** up

So, what stereotypical description do you have for the African people? I mean, if that doesn't look like an African, what does?

I actually watched the opening episode of "The Goode Family". Some of the posters here have missed the theme of this show. It is satire, mocking the do gooders in American culture. The show opens explaining that Ubuntu was adopted 16 years ago as a baby from Africa by the Goodes, a white American couple. They did this thinking that they would give a poor black African baby a chance for a better life in America. They "forgot to check a box" on the adoption form, and they received a white baby from South African Dutch heritage. He was named Ubuntu, perhaps (this is just a guess on my part) as a spoof reference to Mark Shuttleworth, who is also a South African white person.

The show has many other stereotype references to do gooders. They drive a Prius. It has a bumper sticker WWAGD? (What would Al Gore do?) They ride bicycles everywhere. They recycle everything, sorting it all very carefully, and then we see the garbage collector dump it all in the same place.

They are vegans, and feed their dog meatless dog food. (The dog compensates by catching and eating birds and cats in the neighborhood.)

It's all pretty funny, particularly if you are not one of those do gooders.

Thankyou. I can appreciate the humor in the show too.... though I might expect there might be a majority of users of Ubuntu are Al-Gore-type-lefties. I wonder what the political spectrum of Ubuntu users really looks like?

I watched an episode last week. I understand the humor, but I think the show is pretty stupid. I had my DVR setup to record the series, but after I watched one, I canceled that. It's not nearly as good as some of Mike Judge's other work.

Yeah, i watched it too. i heard it had a lot in common with 'king of the hill,' which was very funny. but this show left me bored. quite unoriginal humor. and is the ubuntu kid mentaly challenged or just weird/quiet?

+1 they should give him a slave name, and have him talk with a rich white Connecticut accent. That would be way less offensive.

The most racist people on this planet are those who insist on seeing racism at every turn.

If I had to guess I'd say the majority are probably state socialists of some variant.
