View Full Version : A brain can have a I/O address conflict?

I tried doing this like 5 times, but I can't. The goal is to say the color of each word, rather than reading it. The human brain for whatever reason insist on reading the word, rather than saying the color. This chart produces an I/O address conflict in the brain. Very weird!

haha I was doing this yesterday and I just blanked out...amazing how easily the human brain can get confused.

Same here, I did it. Try again swoll1980. ;)

just do it really slowly

I was able to do it once... Man, I just about had a Buffer Overflow.

It is doable, but you have to concentrate a little bit more than I can manage at 3:20am ;)

That said, if I do it really slowly, I can do it. Like others said, it's just really hard, I slipped up more than once ;)

I can do it too. But not so fast. And it is easy to make a mistake. Try turning your monitor up-side down. Much easier!

That's the point though. It's way harder than I thought it would be. I would think you should be able to do it like a 3 year, who would just spout off the colors, and not think twice about it.

Was this supposed to be difficult? I didn't have a problem with it and I didn't have to do it slow.

On more of a molecular biology level...

An axon can only have so many action potentials firing at once, so it is completely logical that you have signals which are dropped all of the time.

Humans learn symbolically. The brain is simply optimised for processing the words much faster and more accurately than the colours.

As an aside, symbolic recognition is one of the key principles in speed-reading. When most people read, they subconsciously vocalise the words in their mind, which limits reading speed. Humans recognise the symbols much faster than we can vocalise them, so by learning to rely purely on symbolic recognition, readers can read at the speed of thought rather than speed of speech.

A lot of people say this sort of thing, without realising they've been doing it wrong. ;) I've seen people say they've double-checked, etc., but still wrong.

It's doable, you just have to concentrate more than you would if you were just reading words.

So: Is the diagram a Denial Of Service for the human brain, or is it an attempt at a fork bomb?

If you can do it, don't brag about it. Studies show that you have to have the mind of a 3 year old to be able to spout the colors off quickly. The people who can't do it have higher IQ's.

just joking

Lols.

Those that are struggling: Look intensely at the last letter in each word instead of the word as a whole.

in case anyone cares, this is called the stroop effect. read up here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroop_effect
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/words.html
http://www.apa.org/science/stroop.html
http://www.snre.umich.edu/eplab/demos/st0/stroopdesc.html

the short version is that the task is difficult because there are two competing sources of information presented - the actual colour of the word, and the semantic meaning we've come to associate with that collection of letters.

as both pieces of information relate to colours however, they both vie for the same cognitive and attentional processes.

the brain cant handle these competing information task-demands, interference sets in, and we end up reading the word rather than attending to the colour.

Wouldn't seeing English words, and speaking Spanish get confusing? Can you read a book out loud in Spanish, that's written in English?

I can only do it because this year I've had a psychology teacher who sponteneously gave us psychological tests. The first time I tried one of those it took me over a minute.

Just de-focus your eyes a bit so you can see blobs of colour but can't read the words, then it's easy.

The goal of this exorcise wasn't to find away around it, but to understand certain limitations that the human brain has.

no it's not.
I was trying to do it out loud, and I hear myself say the translations of the words, in stead of naming the colors.

Here's a new one for all you guys: Try to spin your foot in a clockward motion and draw a 6 with your finger.

I had absolutely no problem with that, but I play the drums, and guitar, so I've maybe have more coordination than most.

Here's a new one for all you guys: Try to spin your foot in a clockward motion and draw a 6 with your finger.
I find my foor changes direction as I draw the 6.
If I manage the keep my foot going clockwise, i tend to draw the 6 mirrored

I hope this is normal ...
