Original Post:

I'm at a bit of a dilemma. My website (http://collin.co.nr) is currently hosted through the almost-defunct Google Pages (http://www.googlepages.com/). Google Pages is about to be migrated to Google Sites (http://sites.google.com/), and my custom HTML files will not be compatible, since they require you to use their site editor. I also tried Bravehost (http://www.bravehost.com/) and Webs (http://www.webs.com/), but Bravehost has ads and Webs is awfully slow.

So what I need is a free web host that supports my HTML, bypasses the ads (like Google Pages) and about 1MB or more storage. Is it possible? Probably not. But I'm a little scared by those shady "Free web Space" sites, so I just want to now if anyone has had any luck.

List:

--Free
http://000webhost.com/
http://www.webs.com/
http://www.bravehost.com/
http://sites.google.com/
http://code.google.com/appengine/

--Non-free
http://www.one.com/

Good question: it might be relevant to Geocities customers too. I have some pages on Geocities, and Yahoo are likely to pull the plug on the free option later in the year.

I've started to have a look at www.webs.com as an alternative but haven't done any serious research yet.

Just buy some chep shaired hoasting, One.com is reasnably cheep and includes domain registration. Alternatly you could set up Apache on your comp and host it yourself, though that isnt `free' if you count the cost of electrisity/net connection.

www.one.com (http://www.one.com). 1,25 Euro per month, and I use and I am happy with it. You might also want to try www.webs.com or www.freewebs.com, but this gives you great limitations.

I had already tried Webs. But I think I might sign up for One, It seems to be good pricing, only $17.40 USD a year. I'll wait and see if anyone else has good free web hosting, if not, I'll sign up for One.

I might consider plug computing for this one, seeing as the plug computer I'm looking at has about 512MB flash space, and I could probably use that, seeing as I only need about 1-3 MB.

Hm. I wonder what their business model is... I can't imagine selling hosting plans for $5/mo is worth it if they're concurrently hosting god-knows-how-many "free" sites.

I'm currently using Bravenet,...
but, yeah,...they throw in a bunch of adverts. I'd like to try something else, too.

Google App Engine is probably one of the best free webhosting today, its way way more than just static html though.

perhaps we could help you set that up? if you already have a static html.

Oh, I hadn't known about app engine. Ah well, If people still have good free web hosting services, keep posting them, this may help others find a good web host too. I'll make a list in the first post.
