I mean Linux is great and all, but this OS raps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmEvPZUdAVI).

Having switched my main PC to Ubuntu Jaunty, I feel suddenly inadequate....

I know what you mean, Mr. Godawski -- that was God-awful.

That was almost as bad as Leonard Nimoy sining "If I had a Hammer". And, while it was only half as awful as William Shatner singing "Mr. Tambourine Man" and 2/3 as wrong as Phillis Diller giving voice to "I Can't Get No Satisfaction," it might actually even be worse than getting rickroll'd.

Shatner did a pretty decent job with Common People (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRPa0GhxGUs).

At the time, 45k was a hell of a lot of memory.

I think my poor old laptop is trying to tell me something - when the clip got do the bit about more memory the first time, it froze and did a good impression of a skipping CD!

EDIT: I just remembered: a few years back I got hold of some MS-DOS 5 disks from somewhere for nothing..... I didn't like the GUI.

Memmaker was shite, you could get much more below 640k doing it manually.:p

You misspoke... the whole point was to get as much as possible above 640k into upper memory (the first 64k above 640k), and high memory. ;)

(and using memmaker was a good place from which to start when manually fine-tuning)

Oh dear lord, he's started rapping.

I can't imagine so much interest and fanfare over a command line!! Imagine if we did that kind of stuff...

"Welcome, to the Linux Ubuntu GNOME gnome-terminal 2.26 UPGRADE!"

Edit: Watched it to the end. Pure gold. Who else danced along? :D

I remember when they came out with mouse support and the Dos shell.

That seemed SOOO high tech at the time :o

At the time I was using a Mac that came with 1MB of RAM and was expandable to 4MB of RAM (which I ultimately did). I remember wondering what people saw in MS-DOS.

Just one more reason to switch to DR-DOS!

Actually DOS-Shell was amazing when it first came out. A pirated copy of X-Tree Gold was better though. Not that I did such a thing as a kid, of course.

That has scarred me. XP Dude, look at all of the cheap 300 GB hard drives today and see how easy it is to get one, then look back only about one decade and maybe five years ago. Technology is advancing very quickly.

I know I upgraded my DOS machine sometime around '91 or '92, so I can only assume it was to move to DOS 5. I have blocked it all out though.

I dumped DOS shell for norton commander in college, though. Less pretty, but way more functional.
