I loaded on the latest updates for 8.10 to kernel 2.6.27-14-generic. When I reboot the system hangs. The last thing I see is:

/dev/sda:
setting Advance Power Management level to 0xfe (254)

then everything stops.

I can go back to 2.6.27-11-generic and everything works fine.

I CANNOT upgrade to Jaunty due to video card issues. This is a laptop with an ATI video card so no upgrade for me for a while.

So any ideas?

[SOLVED] ATI driver issue. reinstall fixed problem.

I assume you used sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda?
Works fine here on kernel 2.6.27-14

I actually don't have a clue what could be wrong :(

Does your HDD pass the SMART tests?

If I do the hdparm under 2.6.27-11 it works find, or appears too.

It still hangs on boot up... :(

FWIW.... turns out that the problem was the ATI driver... as usual after doing any update. Removed and reinstalled the fglrx drivers and all is well.
