here's what happened.
HP DV9000 series notebook with 2 hard drives. XP on drive 1 and ubuntu installed on drive 2. Everything was working fine until XP went fubar.

I reinstalled XP but kept getting a Grub error 17.

I followed one forum suggestion and removed grub totally.

XP boots up fine now but I can't get to my ubuntu os.

How do I reinstall Grub so I can once again choose my OS at boot up?

-Thanks fr your help with this matter.

This How-To (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows) is the way. After you re-install grub, you will have to manually configure it to boot Windows. The How-To tells you how to do it.
