After installing Ubuntu 8.10 inside Windows XP Home SP1 I rebooted after the install and hit Ubuntu on the boot menu and it took me to GRUB4DOS (the thing said the info at the top and then grub/) i typed in boot and it said "the kernel must be loaded before booting". Do I need to install the kernel? What went wrong? Isn't the kernel supposed to install with it? I tried to install on my IBM Thinkpad R50e with 1.30 ghz celeron m and 256mb ram. If I need to install the kernel how do I do it. I got the CD in the mail. Is the CD defective?

Maybe it is something else but it look like you donīt have enough ram to install live CD.

System requirements

Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit PC and Intel-based Mac architectures. At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the alternate install CD (384MB of RAM is required to use the live CD based installer). Install requires at least 4 GB of disk space.

Try Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/get) alternate CD.
