I have an 8500 I was thinking about dropping in my Ubuntu box, I may just give this a try...

The 8500 will work fine with the standard DRI drivers; you don't need fglrx.

Sorry to hijack the thread on an offshoot, but does anyone know if I need fglrx for an M6 ati mobility card?

Nope, again, will work fine with the stock drivers.

are the new ATI Drivers only available for Hoary? or we can used from the Warty Sources too?
