DropBox user here, but want to give UbuntuOne a try - why not support the company that makes my OS at least in some way or be a happy user if it's better ;)

Site: https://ubuntuone.com/
Announcement: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ubuntu-One-Free-Online-Storage-111347.shtml

It's per-invitations only beta atm... you sign in with your launchpad account, and they mail you an invitation whenever. Not sure if you can hand them out too though.

As far as I know, an invitation was sent out to all Ubuntu Members yesterday.

I've applied for an invitation, so I suppose it's just wait and see. ;)

So is this basically a dropbox like application?

Yep, got my invite yesterday! Not had time to check it out as yet and as for OP, I can't see anything Google like to offer invites!

I was going to apply but alas they have it locked to 9.04 for the beta, so I'll have to wait.

Yeah I think the server is taking a hit. I managed to sign up for my invitation.

Looks like the client is OSS too and well documented, as someone pointed out: http://www.theopensourcerer.com/2009/05/12/ubuntu-one/

So it's entirely open? I could write my own client for UbuntuOne?

I didn't get an invite :( I just found out about it via WorksWithU website.

It took me a few tries as well.

This may be online storage now, but I have a feeling that this is just the entrance fee to a much larger project involving Cloud Computing and desktop-internet integration (which plays nicely into the Netbook and Smart Phone product lines..)

I hope I get approved!

I got an invite last night. It's working pretty well so far. Should be very handy for accessing documents from my home machine at work.

5 second explanation: plonks a new folder in your /home and an applet on your panel. Also accessible by a web interface from machines that don't have Ubuntuone installed. Free for 2GB, US$10/mo for 10GB.

I like. Cheers Canonical!

I can't wait to get my invitation and test this thing :)
It's a really good idea to develop such an offer from Canonical, especially with an opensource approach.

If it becomes a sync for everything it will be useful. For example being able to sink firefox/pidgin/gnome config settings all into the ubuntuone server will be amazing. Otherwise at this point its just a dropbox clone (not that thats a bad thing!)

Can't wait for this to be taken further. Strange how there is very little news about this.

Has anyone heard anything else regarding this? i.e. are there any canonical press releases, etc?

Seems like an equivalent to MobileMe (which would be BIG!)

Seems like an equivalent to MobileMe (which would be BIG!)

MobileMe, though, includes Email/Calendar/Contacts like an Exchange Server or Google Mail as well as a Photo Gallery.

I hope this goes this way, where it will be more than just an online drop-off box, but a full platform.

Would love to become an Ubuntu member, but all I do is troll these forums ;)

What exactly is an "Ubuntu member"? I was signed in automatically with OpenID, didn't even realise I had an openID! Might be linked with launchpad or something.

Anyway, yes that is exactly what I hope this would achieve. I love my current apps, but if I can use this to keep everthing in sync it would be great. For example, I could install it in 2 computers and have my firefox synced up. Of course this is currently possible, but its more of a "hack" than seamless integration!

being able to sink firefox/pidgin/gnome config settings

On Linux the config settings are the .* files in your $HOME,
just sync these files and you get the config settings of firefox/pidgin/gnome

:)

abhiroopb
May 12th, 2009, 05:22 PM
Yes I already sync those with dropbox. But, I would prefer more seamless integration (e.g. being able to use the same firefox settings on 2 different computers, etc.)

I get this:
You are currently on the waiting list for Ubuntu One. As soon as we can, we'll be sending you an invitation code via email.

How long do we have to wait? I have been staring at my inbox for hours!

Me too! This is cruel and unusual punishment!

You have had an Ubuntu One Account for 1 day, 17 hours

Still waiting for the invitation to the ball...

It works, but also on Kubuntu it is not that integrated. But the client is opensource, so it is possible for someone to integrate it himself. :)

So somebody for Kubuntu can do a konquerer or dolphin port, somebody for Xubuntu can do a Thunar port, etc. etc.

I guess somebody can do a Windows port as well.

Someone posted how to get it to work in Xubuntu using Xapplet or something like that - one that allows you to run gnome applets.

I just applied for my invitation! I like the idea so much, I wanted to use Dropbox for ages but didn't trust them with my stuff, what happens if they went bust or privacy issues etc (I can't be bothered to encrypt everything!)

I trust (mostly) Canonical, and this service will be awesome I'm sure. Plus it's open so I can start hacking together some cool Python apps to take advantage of it....

Ooooo the possibilities.

UbuntuOne looks very interesting (i stuck my name in for a Beta invite yesterday).

Though I've not got my invite yet... I think this will be a very basic beta program, Get all the integration kinks out before they try anything fancy like calander / tasks /config synchronization.

But I'll wait and see :D

It sounds like they have some really tasty stuff cooking for it. (Such as webdav support, which - done right - could finally mean a decent way to get Evolution synchronized across systems!). Hopefully this will be successful enough to make Canonical profitable :)

Would be useful if you could use it with your own NAS, but $10 a month for 10gb when you can get 25gb from those nice Microsoft people for free....?

I don't really know, I've heard that theres something wierd about ubuntuone....

And I also have yet to find some official evidence of it's linkage to canonical.

The amount of storage space is a poor indicator of usefulness.

On my dropbox account I use a grand total of 6 megabytes....but 6 megs equates to one hell of a lot of ODF docs...):P

I'm looking forward to where this will go. There's really no limit, it's really exciting. I can see a whole netbook/smartphone/desktop/LTSP/server cloud confab that allows you to have just one "computing environment" spread across as many different machines as you need. That would be so awesome.

But for now, I wish the limit was a little higher. I'd like to backup my music, but I have a fair amount more than either 2 or 10GB.

god. noscript is so annoying sometimes. I was trying to click the 'sign in ' button and it was like HAI THERE USER I'M GONNA BLOCK THIS SUSPECTED XSS ATTACK AND GIVE YOU NO WAY TO ACTUALLY BYPASS IT HAVE A GOOD DAY :D

it made me have to use chrome to request an invitation because even with it disabled it never got past the 'openid' part of it.

bad news bears.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that this something entirely new to computing. It's just a nice straightforward way to implement it. Plus it's obviously Canonical trying to find novel ways to monetise Ubuntu while sticking to their "free forever" philosophy. Which is a good thing.

but a simple script doesn't do advanced stuff like using FAM to see when files have been updated on the filesystem ( and therefore prompting it to sync it with the server).

Read those articles, very appropriate to this thread.

Also, Adrive.com. 50gigs free(as in beer). Yes really.

I know, I know, Ubuntu is the best. If we want them to make money, why don't we donate some money? I haven't, has anyone here? Has anyone here done development for Ubuntu for free?

My way to give back(just so you know I'm not a complete *******)is to answer support questions on the forum when I can, and to praise Ubuntu's glories to anyone that will listen.

I know this is a bit of an old thread now, but I just saw something interesting.

Most people are thinking of UbuntuOne as a DropBox replacement. If you check the Launchpad page (https://launchpad.net/%7Eubuntuone), you'll see some of the other plans in store, like screen sharing (https://launchpad.net/u1-ss) for UbuntuOne members. That one really interests me.

Anything to make maintaining my parents computer easier.
