For the sake of trying to make any nosey neighbor's think twice, I named my network "HackerzInc."

However, I do have it secured now. Never had an intrusion. But then again I also live in an area where I'm surrounded by old folk, so I doubt I have to worry about my neighbors snooping my wifi to begin with.

I've seen some rather funny ones but none of them are suitable for posting on this forum (and most wouldn't translate very well to English anyway).

Still, there seems to be couple of basic rules for available networks, no matter where I go:

1: There's always one unsecured network using SSID "TOSHIBA"
2. There's always one unsecured network using SSID "linksys"
2. There's always one unsecured network with SSID asking for people to not use that network.

First two are clearly because the biggest ISP's in this region hand out Toshiba cable modems and Linksys ADSL modems, so there's simply one person in every house with unconfigured hardware.

It's the third rule that continues to amaze me. Clearly these people have configured their wireless networks, but what made them to only cnange the SSID and not set up any encryption? And what on earth makes them think that using such SSID would really help anything?

Anyway, the result is that if you add "TOSHIBA" and "Linksys" to your networks list you'll have wireless connection pretty much anywhere you go. :D

(by the way, my network uses SSID "Skynet". Although it's a hidden network so it doesn't really make any difference. But I jst enjoy seeing the "connected to skynet"-message when I log into my computer. :D)

WEP and WPA can be cracked within 5 minutes, so they are pretty useless. On top of that, some systems don't support WPA2, and since using WEP or WPA is pretty much pointless if there's a determined cracker in your neighborhood, it's best to just ask politely, or step up to WPA2+AES.

Although, I do consider WEP/WPA codes to be reasonable "please respect my privacy" tags.

Any law-abiding person in the United States knows not to go on someone else's router, as it is considered akin to stealing cable or siphoning gas.

Excuse you, but I have a random 3-letter, 1-underscore, 3-number wireless name. :P I don't have a problem with that. I have a problem with people having unsecured or WEP networks because that is the default, and it bothers me more if the name is changed but the security is still non-existent or WEP. And yes, I have WPA2+AES.

For work, when we are setting up new systems (HVAC control systems) before getting on the customer's network (which may not even exist yet for new construction) we will sometimes use an AP so we can sit in a more hospitable environment than a mechanical room.

On a new construction site recently, a coworker was having a lot of trouble with his AP. Not only would it not accept connections, it didn't want to reset with the hardware reset button. By the time he got it functioning again, he was pretty ticked off. So from then on, whenever we would show up onsite and connect, we connected to "Hunk of Crap"!

Lots of people are mentioning that they hate all the linksys ESSIDs they see. I don't mind, especially when they think they have done the right thing and put wpa2 encryption on it, but they have no idea that wpa cracking is ESSID specific (using cowpatty with a salted hash file, that is). Those poor suckers never keep me out for more than 5-7 minutes. Not that I do anything malicious or whatever, just prove that WPA is inherently insecure (having a password with a that is a dictionary word, that is).

It must surely be WiFiTrip (which I've set up myself: "Trip" is the nickname of the guy I set up the WiFi for, his surname beginning with Trip*).
He then changed provider after a year and got a WiFi router from the provider directly, so he's now part of the Alice-SomeHexCode army too :(
