The wifi LED does not display on my netbook but I believe that this is a known issue with Ubuntu 9.04 so I'm happy to live with this until the next release. I was wondering if there was a way to turn the wireless card off or have it power off automatically if there is no connection in order to extend battery life?

Is it the Netbook remix you have installed

I think the wifi toggle switch under the LED works, regardless of whether the LED does or not. The trouble is, there is no way to know whether the wifi is off or not in the GUI.

If it is Ubuntu-9.04- netbook-remix just go to the icon before the battery icon (It shows your signal strength) and click.
Then uncheck the radio button to de select the wireless connection, to re-connect tick the radio button again.
