system stuck at blank/blinking scren after booting

i had installed fresh copy of ubuntu 9.04.
after installing some packages like k3b, buildessential,vbox etc.
i restarted the system.

and now when i am starting booting process goes succesfully but login screen is not coming. system stuck there.

i booted it with recovery mode. repaired xserver file. but it is of no use.

i hv chossen ext 4 for formatting is this is causing any problem.

could be the default video driver set by xorg.conf not working, change it to vesa for a try
