No menus in gnome after install

I have done a clean install of 9.04. I have an ASUS wireless lan (WL-138g PCI adpater )card which i installed the windows drivers for by installing ndisgtk and then adding the drivers; at this point i can access my wireless network.

Once I reboot ubuntu starts he gnome desktop is siaplyed but without any menus.

Any suggestions
