Does ubuntu upgrade change the file system?

I am planning to upgrade ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04
i have heard that ubuntu 9.04 uses ext4 file-system that is fast and all
does automatic update make this change or should i reinstall?

No, update doesn't change the filesystem. If you want ext4, you need to reinstall and specify ext4 when you format.. ext3 is still default.

A nice reinstall always makes things shiny and new anyway..... Yes, it's blasphemy. You should be able to just upgrade, but I always seem to have little issues.

One bit of advice? When you reinstall put the OS on a oh.... 4-8 gig partition, then put /home on a huge partition all by it's self.

Next time you reinstall you can nuke the OS partition and keep the /home partition with all your lovely settings, favorites, music, etc.

It's also fun to keep several 4 gig partitions and try out different flavors of Linux. Just use the same /home when you're doing all the installs and you get all your data on all of your flavors of Linux.
