Random shut-down

Hi, I am new to ununtu and like the concept but cant get it to run properly for more than a few minutes. It seems to function ok, I can go on line etc. but at seemingly randome times it will shut down. I have just downloaded the latest updates in the hope this cures the problem, but without success..Any ideas?
