as i said i downloaded the 9.04 .iso, burned it, and turned the computer on with the disk inside-- shouldn't that make my dell laptop boot from the disk and begin installing ubuntu?

the error message i get is:
no boot sector on internal drive

no bootable devices--strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility

i just installed a new hard drive but i can't imagine that i could have put it in wrong, it's pretty self-explanatory.

did you burn the iso (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BurningIsoHowto) as an image? Burning it as a data cd won;t work

logos43 is right...burn the .iso as an image not as a data...you can use brasero if your running ubuntu...
