Cairo Dock or Avant Window Navigator (AWN) seem to have some of what you are looking for. :P

KDE4 has that. Actually I'm quite sure that would be where the Stardock/Fences-people copied the idea in the first place.. ;)

Probably some Screenlet could allow doing the same stuff as well, but you'll have to check that out yourself or ask somebody who uses Screenlets.

(and no, unlike what the previous poster suggested, neither AWN or Cairo-Dock does that. They are docks.)

Heha that is exactly what a folder view on KDE 4 does. If you want to have that but not install all of KDE, you can try just installing plasma and running it on startup.

Stardock has already addressed this claim:

The first prototype of "Desktop Icon Organizer" was written for Windows 98 in early 1999, when the author was just 14. Conceptualized long before KDE 4.1's keen 'FolderView' gadget and created with different goals in mind, original prototypes are available from as far back as 2003 (screenshot), with excitement for a public product building in 2007. After many years, rewrites and rounds of prototypes, this once side-project of the author's has been finished and polished - now proudly, "Stardock Fences".

Found a screenlet on Gnome-look.org. I'll try it tonight.

It looks ok. There's no scrolling, can't drop folders and transparency doesn't work without composite.

Other than that it's ok.

I'm also using this screenlet. Unfortunately it's no replacement for Fences. :(

I'd pay for this on Ubuntu under Gnome.

I wonder how something like Fences would work with WINE?
Probably horribly haha.
