Ubuntu ->Xubuntu ..HELP!!!

Hey all. I had ubuntu 9.04 on my pc , but my computer is an old peice of crap and i was advised to switcht o xubuntu as it was made for older, less-capable machines. So i did. But, will installing the cd, it stopped. When i try to install xubuntu, it allows me to choose which language i want to be in, then gives me the menu of " install, install without changes to computer.. Etc) But once i select something from that menu the computer freezes up. Also if i boot off the hard drive now, when Ubuntu opens, it'll go as far as the log in screen then freeze up!?!?!? what do i do .

What are your computer's specs?

If your computer is "an old peice of crap", you will problably have issues with running the LiveCD versions of ubuntu.

As for the CD, does it throw any errors when you try to install? Or does it just hang and do nothing?

If you can, try selecting the option to "Check CD for Defects". Sometimes, when a disc is burned too fast, data can become corrupted, and that might be what you are experianceing.

Well....To re-phrase. . Its only three years old. But its definatly not top of the line three yers ago. Its a Compaq Presario Desktop, with a pentium4 processor, 80 Gb hard drive. Not sure what my ram is.. but i just had it upgraded.

The cd doesnt give me any errors, it jsut "hangs and does nothing" ..freezes until i reboot it and try doing it again .
Your the second person to tell me i may have burned the disc to fast- So im using a friends laptop at the moment to burn yet another linux disc- This time at a 4x speed instead of 32x. Hopefully this will solve my problems.

Or try the alternate CD to install Xubuntu on your machine.

Select the write speed. If you are burning a Ubuntu Live CD (one that you may want to boot from), it is recommended that you write at the lowest possible speed.

Did you also check the md5sum of the iso image that you downloaded ?

well thanks for the help everyone. I've tried everyones suggesions. But it just won't do anything. It now won't even except a boot from Cd-Rom option...Nothing.

Does anyoe know of a way that i can just wipe everything on the computer completly?
And start from scratch with a fresh ubuntu cd?
