Nathans are the best hot dogs ever.

http://www.nathansfamous.com

I like them roasted with just mustard on them but it has to be the dark spicey mustard and it has to be French's brand mustard.

Third vote for Nathan's..I never missed a chance to go to the stand in Coney Island when I visited my grandparents in Brooklyn.

Does anyone remember the chow mein on a bun they served?...do they still sell it?

Don't forget the Hires root beer to wash it down with...yummy!

I would never ever eat a sausage (or burger, or meatball, or pork pie etc) unless I`d made it myself (that means made by my wife - I wouldn`t know how).

Or my life depended on it.

But if I did it would have Coleman`s English Mustard on it.

But I`m not going to, so it wont.

There's a great program that plays every now and then on PBS called "A Hot Dog Program".

You could probably find it on Youtube too.

I highly recommend watching it if you like hot dogs :)

I like hot dogs, but I don't usually eat them because I often get nasty headaches afterwards from whatever it is that's in a lot of them.

However, putting that aside for the moment, I like them with ketchup and nothing else.

Well, and a bun, of course.

Why nasty headaches?...Sodium Nitrate?

You could go for all natural hot dogs that don't have Sodium Nitrate!

Disgusting!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_dog

A hot dog is a type of fully cooked, cured and/or smoked moist sausage of soft, even texture and flavor, usually made from mechanically recovered meat or meat slurry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanically_recovered_meat

Mechanically separated meat (MSM), also known as mechanically recovered/reclaimed meat (MRM), is a paste-like meat product produced by forcing beef, pork, or chicken bones, with attached edible meat, under high pressure through a sieve or similar device to separate the bone from the edible meat tissue. Mechanically separated meat has been used in certain meat and meat products since the late 1960s. This product can be contrasted with meat extracted by advanced meat recovery systems. The most common type of MSM are hotdogs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_slurry

A meat slurry, reconstituted meat, or emulsified meat, is a liquefied meat product that contains fewer fats, pigments and less myoglobin than unprocessed dark meats. Meat slurry also eases the process of meat distribution and is more malleable than dark meats.
Meat slurry is not designed to sell for general consumption; rather, it is used as a meat supplement in food products for humans, such as chicken nuggets, and food for domestic animals. Poultry is the most common meat slurry; however, beef and pork are also used.

Although, I have to agree that Nathans taste awesome.

I also like to make linguica dogs every once in a while when I want to really through caution to the wind.

And to mips> unless you grow all your own vegetables, fruits, grain and/or obtain your own meat if applicable, then you have no idea how much crap you're putting into your body either. The Certified Organic stuff is great IF you can afford to buy 100% organic and if happen to live near a grower. But, once it leaves their farm, its in the hands of transporters and grocery stockers who could really care less most of the time.

Sabretts or Ballpark Beef for me, with just ketchup and the bun...

Also, Ballpark has a new Angus Beef Hot Dog that totally ROCKS, they're just like 3x the price of their normal beef franks, and I think there's only 8 in a package as opposed to 10. Their normal beef ones really make my mouth water thinking about them. Grill 'em until they're a little black... damn it, now I'm starving ><

My sister became a vegetarian after her 4th grade class took a field trip to some Hot Dog plant. We all know the crap that goes into these things, but they're so damn good, I don't give a crap. I watched those videos before, they don't bother me one bit. Some people are just weak when it comes to this stuff I guess.

anybody here ever heard about Pink's Hot Dogs? its this famous place in LA, (down the street from Hollywood on La Brea) thats been around for like, 70 years. Their walls are covered in signed photos of celebrities that have eaten there and if you try to go there during lunch hours, the line is usually around the block.

http://www.pinkshollywood.com/pgz/history.htm

When I lived in Hollywood, i got to eat their by studying the best times to go there when tourists aren't hungry. i had this ridiculous hot dog(s) with more than everything on it.

We have a bit of local delacacy in Slovenia called Hot Horse (yes it is horse meat).
I haven't eat it in a long time as I'm a fan of Horse burger, but it's more or less the same one is burger the other is "wurst" / sausage... or whatever it's called.

And you have any imaginable addition to it:
Mustard
Mayonaise
Nacho chees
"Ajvar" = a pepper (paprika) sauce...
Tabasco
sauer craut
onion
tomato
...

Anyway it's really great, one of the best actually!

Ahhh..the good ol' hotdog.
Just stick to the original and best..fried onions (the best part), ketchup and mustard. English mustard is a bit hot (like Wasaabi) so I use French.
The only time I see them being sold nowadays is at the funfair.
The only possible twist I have added when assembling hotdogs is a bit of hot pepper sauce but I am trying to move away from eating chillis.

They have to be chicken, beef or vegetarian as I never eat porky worky.

The absolute best dogs in the world come from Nu-Way Weiners (http://www.nu-wayweiners.com/) down in Macon, Georgia. But since I can't get down there all that much, I have to settle for dogs from the Varsity (http://www.thevarsity.com/).

Either way, they're best with mustard, onions and chili.

I feel like laying a recipe on you peeps.
My own Teriyaki....

Soy sauce, Vinegar (any type), sugar and oil...Sesame (best), sunflower or vegetable.

Marinate your meat or whatever in this overnight.

Next evening fry the meat till kinda bbq looking then add water cover with a lid and steam till cooked.
Add the rest of the liquid left from marinade (plus maybe a bit of water) and reduce till sauce is thick.
Also during the frying add mushroom onion and green pepper.
Don't forget the 'secret' ingredients...Chilli flakes, Ginger, Garlic and a pinch of Curry powder.
Then Salt and Black/White or Sancho pepper if you like.

To be honest I usually add a spoon of Thai fish sauce but you don't have to if it's hard to obtain.
I am not a great cook but this will come out tasting like real oriental food trust me.

I'm a vegetarian, but I make exceptions for Chicago dogs. :-)

Chicago dogs are Vienna brand beef hot dogs (And the ones you get at the store aren't very good. Don't know why, but the Vienna hot dogs from restaurants are much better.), on a poppy seed bun, with a dash of celery salt, diced onions, tomatoes, a pickle spear, incredibly green relish, yellow mustard, and two sport peppers.
