View Full Version : [ubuntu] Xubuntu to Ubuntu, Now Sound Won't Work

Hi all,

I'm new to linux, and I wanted to see what xfce is like - I switched over to it, then back to ubuntu and used sudo apt-get remove xubunt-desktop xfce and then autoremove. Now in a gnome session my sound doesn't work.

My sound card is using the ALSA driver and was working fine on a fresh install (2 days ago), and now from coming back to gnome and removing xfce it doesn't work anymore. I followed all of the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 and still no success.

The only other change that might be responsible for the sound not working is VirtualBox - just did a windows XP box last night, and perhaps that's why it's not working - so I searched over there for sound problems and they said something about analog and mixing, so I turned the sound off on the Vbox, and still gnome sound isn't working.

I'm a total Linux noob, and I know I can fix this by reinstalling and starting over, but I can't get into a habit of doing that every time something goes wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
