I've given the latest Kubuntu 9.04 a spin via live CD, and I really dislike the desktop compared to my current kde 3 on ubuntu 8.1. I do a lot of development and having all the apache/perl/mysql already there is easy with the server install, so does anyone know if I could install the server version of ubuntu 9.04 and get kde 3 running on it, or will I be stuck with kde 4 or gnome for my desktop?

I'm in a similar boat as you. I prefer KDE 3 over 4. I found this which may be of value: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2009-April/041897.html

Be sure to read the whole page before doing anything. I haven't tried it but I may give it a shot.

KDE 4.3 is right around the corner, have you considered trying that? I think it is really good from what I have seen from the beta's. As good as KDE 3.5 was, it's not a good idea to hold on to it for much longer as it is pretty much being abandoned. I think KDE 4.x is amazing once you give it a chance. I love it. :)
